CT Calcium Scoring

Dallus Heart Study

A further analysis of the Dallus Heart Study was presented at the American College of Cardiology ASM in 2007.

A report on www.theheart.org suggests that, the test is useful in male patients.

The risk of cardiovascular events was assessed using the Framingham score.

One of fifteen men aged between thirty and sixty-five years had the risk of cardiovascular events increased from the "moderate" range to the "high" category after measurement of the calcium score.

Interestingly, approximately one of fifteen men at "low-moderate risk" also had a calcium score greater than 400, transforming their status to the "high-risk" group.

The significant change in risk status would ensure these patients are "eligible" for pharmacological therapy to reduce their risk factor profile.

If an even lower calcium score cut-point was used (ie a score of 100) then, as expected, as even greater proportion of patients would have their risk status altered.

The test was not useful in women, in this study, aged between thirty and sixty-five years when a calcium score cutpoint of 400 was used.

Ideally, in time, we may see the results of studies revealing the effectiveness of primary prevention measures with the additional use of the calcium score compared with the "traditional" risk factor approach.
