Hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy- LVH and ethnicity
In UK there is evidence for more LVH in Afro-Carribeans.
Dallas Heart Study in US: found more LVH in blacks, even if correct for
age, SBP, BMI.
The Sokolow-Lyon criteria are less specific for LVH in blacks, Cornell
criteria performs better.
There is more LVH in black athletes compared with whites.
NOMAS- seemed to imply that for blacks the LVH relates to hypertension
but also to BMI, diabetes and age.
DASH- found more non-dipping in blacks.
Africans are a lot more sensitive to salt and this may relate to
differences in genotype. see Cicr 1994, LV mass regression with salt
restriction.
